Cog Belt Reduction Drive Kit
Only available through
Quad City Ultralight or their authorized dealers
Replacement parts
original Gates Powergrip GT2 cog belts are available
from us for $98.00 each. Original NSK driven pulley bearings are available
from us for $23.00 each
Rotax 2-stroke aircraft engines produce their power
at high RPMs. Propellers need to turn much slower.
On the Challenger, reduction is achieved through a
belt drive which at the same time raises the
propeller shaft sufficiently to allow clearance for
a relatively large and efficient propeller.
The use of a Rotax gearbox would not allow
sufficient propeller diameter in this particular
installation.
3. Starter and electrical system
Recoil starter
included
The recoil starter is included with the engine, but
most owners prefer the added convenience of an
electric starter. The Rotax electric starter,
mounted parallel to the crankshaft, cannot be
installed on the Challenger because of the low
clearance between the engine and firewall. A third
party starter made by GPL and mounted at a right
angle to the crankshaft is a popular option.

Genesis G16EP Battery
16Ah capacity, sealed pure lead technology for
the ultimate in safety (nonspillable) and starting
power
$125.00
If you
use an electric starter, you will need to add a
battery to your electrical system.
4. Filters
Bosch fine fuel filter
Transparent with fine plastic mesh, recommended to
replace the paper element filter provided with the
Challenger kit
$7.00
A Rotax Aircraft Engine engine equipped with proper
and well maintained filters is a reliable, durable
and powerful one!
Rotax/K&N dual carburetor air filter
Washable, reusable air filter has safety wire
tabs for positive securing. Standard on the best
installations.
$60.00
Pre-filter
Permanent (storage and flying) air filter
cover. Repels dust, water spray, rain and snow to
keep your air filter cleaner longer and prevent
water ingestion.

Oil injection tanks kit
Only available through
Quad City
Ultralight or their authorized dealers
Your 582UL already has an oil injection pump
installed. Use it with these two oil injection tanks
mounted on either side of the radiator.
6. Exhaust system
Rotax
side mount type exhaust system
included
The standard exhaust configuration for Challenger
installations.
7. Engine and exhaust mounting

Engine mounting kit
Only available through
Quad City
Ultralight or their authorized dealers
Replacement parts
original Lord brand rubber engine mounts are available from us for $10.00
each
The Challenger's engine is fastened to a mounting
plate through four crankcase studs. Six rubber
engine mounts isolate the aircraft's structure from
the mounting plate, efficiently smoothing the
engine's vibration. The entire assembly is hung
cylinders-down from the structure's main "keel".

Exhaust bracket kit
Only available through
Quad City
Ultralight or their authorized dealers
Replacement parts
rubber cushions for the bracket are available from us, $6.00 for the
set
The exhaust muffler is attached to the cylinder heads by a stainless steel
clamp.
8. Propeller
Warp Drive adjustable pitch 3 blade 60" propeller
HP-L type hub
$845.00
Add
nickel leading edge
+$190.00
The Challenger II with late-model belt reduction
drive has clearance for a 60" propeller. The 582
setup uses a 3-blade ground adjustable
propeller. It is extremely durable thanks to its
carbon fibre construction and optional inlaid nickel
leading edge.
Its pitch can be freely and precisely adjusted on
the ground instead of swapping propellers.
9. Engine controls
Aero Controls Challenger Throttle Pack,
582 version
Includes:
Front seat quadrant with throttle and choke lever. A friction adjustment knob is installed
on the side.
Rear seat quadrant with throttle lever, similar to the front seat quadrant.
High quality throttle cable assembly: single cable from front
quadrant to splitter, two or three cables to the
carburetors and oil injection pump lever (if installed). Very precise,
maintenance-free, allows perfect carburetor synchronization.
High quality choke cable assembly similar to the throttle cable.
Heavy-duty push pull cables interconnect both quadrants allowing
positive and precise control
$300.00 (no
oil injection)
Change to 3-way throttle cable for oil injection
+$15.00
The stock engine control quadrant and cable setup on
the Challenger is far from ideal. First, there are
two cables routed all the way from the rear seat
throttle lever to each carburetor. These cables have
a lot of play in their housings. The result is that
the carburetor pistons never move at exactly the
same rate, desynchronizing their operation and
preventing the engine from reaching its full
smoothness and efficiency. Second, the front and
back seat levers are interconnected by a pushrod
which has been known to give and bend when the
instructor and student disagree on power settings.
The best and most popular alternative is to use the
Aero Controls Challenger Throttle Pack.

10. Engine monitoring
Set of Westach 2" size instruments
Tachometer
Hourmeter
Liquid temperature
Two-in-one CHT
Two-in-one EGT
Liquid temperature probe
2 CHT probes
2 EGT probes
panel size: 5xØ2"
$580.00
It is
essential to monitor the following engine parameters
to ensure its proper operation:
Tachometer (RPM)
Hourmeter
Liquid temperature
Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) for both cylinders
Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) for both cylinders
There are different ways to accomplish this. The
first is to use the classic analog (steam gauge
type) instruments.
MGL Stratomaster EMS-582 :
Tachometer, hourmeter, liquid temp., 2xCHT, 2xEGT,
liquid temp. probe, 2 CHT
probes, 2 EGT probes, panel size: 2-1/4", very small display, use only if
panel space
is very limited
$392.00
The alternative is to use a digital all-in one
instrument. Our selection provides precise and
reliable readings on backlit liquid crystal displays
(LCD) and has the advantage of being able to trigger
a warning light to attract your attention if a
parameter is out of limits.
